Flour Tortillas
Cooked up by Lori on Jan 15, 2008Something I make ALOT is tortillas and I’m surprised at how many people don’t know how to make them. Yes, they are more work than store bought but they don’t even come close in taste!! In fact, my oldest and myself won’t eat store bought..yuck!
I’ve also decided to do something different. Since many of you want to print the recipes and only some of you want the pictures too, I am going to post the recipe first and during the preparation part, I will number each task. That task’s number will match the numbered pictures. Get it? That way, if you decide you want to print the recipe, you can print only the recipe without pictures if you choose to do so.
Okay, first things first. WASH YOUR HANDS! This is all done with the hands so you need to clean em’ up. You’re gonna need 3 essential tools, well…2 for sure. A tortilla Griddle, rolling pin, and a Tortilla Keeper. You can put your tortillas in just about anything that will be tight but can still breathe. Also, an old broomstick handle or pvc pipe works well for a rolling pin;)
I don’t use measuring spoons or cups when making these so the amounts are guesstimations. Is that a word?
INGREDIENTS:
- 4 c. flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/8 tsp. baking powder
- 3/4 c. shortening
- 1-2 cups of HOT water
PREPARATION:
1. Get the griddle going before you start this part so it will be nice and hot. Sift all dry ingredients together and add shortening. Mix thoroughly. (just like you were making a pie crust.)
2. Add hot water. Obviously you don’t want to burn yourself but the hotter you can stand it, the easier your tortilla dough will be to work with.
3. Knead until soft, smooth dough is formed.
4. Pinch off dough (a little less than the size of a golf-ball) and form into a rounded biscuit looking thing..lol.
5. Dip into flour and roll out.
6. Cook on your tortilla griddle. When you see the bubbles NOT coming up, that’s when you flip or take off.
7. Throw them in your tortilla keeper and enjoy with some Carne Guisada!..Hint:(that’s coming soon)

WOW…writing this post actually took WAAAAY longer than it takes to make these!

I didn’t know making flour tortillas was so easy. I’m sure they don’t fall apart like the flour tortillas I buy at the store do! I’m going to have to try this recipe out sometime!

Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. For some reason I had always assumed they were harder to make, and this from someone that loves to make her own homemade bread and pie crusts LOL. Now I want to make some tortillas for lunch today
Love the recipe format, btw, the pictures after the recipe makes it really easy to read over the entire recipe and see what it’s going to take, then I can refer down to the pictures where needed.

I make them similar. Minus the baking powder. I think I roll them a little thinner though. Or maybe yours are just looking thicker because of the baking powder?
Also when I cook mine I leave them on the first side until they change color (this is really subtle and usually takes less than 30 seconds) then I flip them over and leave them on that side until it just starts to brown.
Next I flip them over again onto another burner. This burner does not have a pan on it. I have one of those things that goes over a gas burner. I dont know what that is called. But I put it over my electric burner so that I can lay the tortilla on top of it. The tortilla puffs up (if I have done it right) It puffs up till it almost looks like a bubble.
My mom used to make 200-300 tortillas weekly back when I was a kid. It has been years now since she has made them. What I remember though is she was anal about getting them perfectly round. So since my tortillas are shaped more like a liver, lol, or a kidney…. I am too embarrassed to take my tortillas to family functions. Ha. Not that there is anything wrong with tortillas that aren’t round…but you know how that sort of thing is. Ha.
But seriously, the taste of a homemade tortilla hot off the stove? Oh my. They are perfect plain. But adding butter and jam? Mmmm. Or just butter. So good.
Sorry for the long comment, but I can get very excited about tortillas, lol.

My parents have used the word guesstimate ever since I was little. It isn’t a real word but probably should be.

I had this idea that it would be harder to make tortillas. This looks pretty easy.

Hi Pamela! They can be stored for several days UNrefrigerated, and probably longer refrigerated. Unfortunately, I don’t have much experience with this because ours get eaten within hours…lol.

I’m so glad I found you through Menu Plan Monday…I just told the kids I was going to find a recipe for flour tortillas and start making them myself…the store prices are ridiculous, and you’re right, they don’t taste anything like homemade! Thank you, thank you for sharing this recipe!
