Boycott Steak and Shake
This is an unusual post for this blog but I believe the story needs to be told. Since many of you don’t read my personal blog, I am telling the story here. Karen, who happens to be a deaf mom, was denied service at the Steak and Shake when she pulled up to the window to order. She explained that she was unable to hear the drive thru speaker and she was STILL DENIED service!
FREAKIN’ RIDICULOUS!!!
Please join in and boycott Steak & Shake:
I refuse to eat at Steak and Shake until Karen Putz gets an apology from the CEO of the company himself, Alan B Gilman.
Please join me in spreading the word & standing up for Karen and everyone else with a disability who wants a goddamn shake.
I encourage you stumble this post, as well as, theirs. The more it gets spread around, the better chance she has in getting heard which will hopefully lead to an apology ASAP!
Thank you Wendy for spreading the word AND standing up for Karen!

Thanks for posting this. I don’t live near a Steak and Shake, but I will spread the word.
Thanks for your support!
I don’t live near this place and I’m glad but I’ll spread the word. That is horrible.

That is terrible. See why the government has to force businesses to put in handicapped accessible restrooms. Because people won’t do what is right unless they are Made to do it.

I agree that the woman was not treated properly but wouldn’t it be more appropriate to go to the source (the actual employee who denied her service and having that person apologize) before demanding an apology from the CEO of the company??? Is it possible that the store is a franchise operation?? The local mgt should certainly be involved with an appropriate resolution – my guess is the CEO of Steak and Shake probably doesn’t even know this happened….
Hi Lori:
I blogged about it too in my weekly gratitude post. My gratitude went to Karen Putz for having the courage to stand up and be counted in the face of withering criticism and pressure. Her story both inspired and pressed some deeply hidden buttons that I didn’t know existed!
Thanks for helping a fellow blogger spread the news – she’s my buddy too!

I really feel for this woman. Would it be expected that there would not be a deaf sign interpretor at the window? Or that there would? I don’t get it. How is one supposed to communicate.
Obviously, there must be something I am not “seeing” or “hearing” here.
[...] My Wooden Spoon: Boycott Steak and Shake [...]
Hello, I cannot believe that a company that i work for would hurt someone like they did. I’m so ashamed of that restaurant. I work for Steak n Shake in Florida, and I’m an Auditor and Trainer. I have 11 restaurants that i audit, and have shared this horrible experience with all of them. they are in shock.I agree that The ceo needs to reply. I don’t know what, if any response that steak n shake has done about this, but one thing has come from it, is that 11 steak n shake restaurants will never treat anyone like this. I will apologize on behalf of my company, and make no excuses. I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure that the person who is responsible and restaurant deals with this. One of my Restaurants actually has a group of deaf guests that comes as a group often. We have a special area that they love. We make sure its saved and special reservations. We love them. I’m again sorry for what happened.
