A Little Bit of Mountain Oyster Cowboy Cuisine
Do you have a clue of what I’m referring to??? Well, if you don’t, let me just tell you exactly what it is. CALF NUTS, CALF FRIES, or even BULL BALLS! Oh yeah, I bet you’re licking your lips right now ain’t ya?! LOL.
Believe it or not, this is a cowboy favoriteJ Not mine mind you, but definitely a favorite among the fellas. During the cowboy works, the lil’ bulls get gathered to have their manhood taken away from them. It sounds sad to some but we can’t have a million bulls running around trying to breed a handful of cows;)
Anyways, these mountain oysters are usually “chicken fried” but today they are getting grilled. When you chicken fry them, you normally peel off the outer skin layer to cook them but not when you cook them on the grill.
All your gonna need for this Cowboy Cuisine is a little salt & pepper, calf nuts, and a grill. After you’ve cleaned them up, leaving the thin outer skin layer in-tact, you simply throw them on the fire, season them to your taste buds, and wait for them to pop (or split open;).
When you eat them, you only eat the inside, throwin’ the skin away. Doesn’t sound very ladylike I know but I did say it was a favorite among the fellas;)
So here they are, fresh calf nuts on the grill with a little salt & pepper.

Here they are plumping up on the verge of popping and being done.

And VIOLA! Done and ready to eat.

I can’t say I’ve ever seen so many nuts at once.

I can say ,if I never see those again that would be ok with me. I don’t know how people can eat them just looking at them anywhere near food ,grills, dishes makes me feel …yuck!

I went to a vegan diet in January of this year…but I have had these in the past. I’ve had them battered and fried and on the grill and they aren’t bad at all. Taste like chicken ;)…not really…

Never saw a recipe for these before, heh!
Many years ago when I was a kid, I already had a reputation for being willing to eat anything (once). An older male cousin said, “I bet you’d even eat Rocky Mountain oysters.” I said, “What’s that?” When he explained, I just said, “Why not?” He was very crestfallen at that response!
I’ve actually still never had them, but yep, I’d try’em.

when i was young, it was my job to take the red Gandy’s ice cream bucket around the pens and pick up those lovely calf nuts. then, my grandmother would cook them…and yes, i ate them, never really thinking about origins. thanks for inspiring the memories.

Serious?
I never heard of such a thing. Wow. I am shocked. Utterly disgusted…ewww, I could see the veins.
Honestly, I had to take several looks to make sure this was really calf nuts or beans…
I think I will imagine beans, that makes my stomach feel a bit better.

Definitely a picture there! I’ve fixed these fried with a batter before but never in the um, nude!
Oh lord!
Yeah, I love me some nuts but I think I will get the salted kind that come in a can.
But love your presentation.

It looks good. These are really fresh ones, they probably have a better flavor than the store bought ones in the package. Can you boil them? If so I would try boiling them in BBQ sauce and onions for a very long time. Or would this be ovekill for the poor testicle?
This will be my first time tring them. I did see my grandfather who was a ranch hand fry up a pair of hog nuts in a skillet as a child. He seemed to have enjoyed it besause I didn’t see him share it with anyone else in the family.
-Grilled beef nuts! Looks like smoked sausage to me, yum.
I am a dad of two boys with autism, I look to your blog for current info! Thank You!
Waste not want not people. Meat is meat. Why is it more revolting to eat a testicle than a rib or leg or any other part of a dead animal? I don’t understand.
Clearly I’d eat it happily.
