Eat Shrink & Be Merry Cookbook - 5 Stars!

This has to be the most fun cookbook I’ve ever read!  Not only that, the recipes in Eat, Shrink, and be Merry are wonderful.  What I love the most is the simplicity of them.  I mean, the ingredients are “normal”.  Not your hard-to-find type of ingredients.  They are ones that you can find in a small town grocery store like mine!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this book, maybe you’ve heard of Looneyspoons.  Unfortunately, that book is no longer in print but it’s the same ladies, who happen to be sisters.  Their story alone is amazing and I was inspired to say the least at how their whole project came about.  It’s totally worth the read and I encourage you to check it out.  I don’t get a lot of time to read but it was so real, so unbelievable, and it really tells you about who they are and what makes their cookbooks unique and special.  And not that this matters so much but I LOVE the size and colors of this book.  Very refreshing!

This cookbook rawks because it’s low fat eating and not your typical 2-ingredient no-fat-crappy ingredients recipe either.  It has good, real ingredients and the meals sound like eatable meals.  I cannot stress that enough!!! NORMAL, GOOD and HEALTHY recipes! Something that you need to remember when eating healthy or dieting, is that portion size is everything!!!!  You MUST watch your portions because it does no good to eat a giant plate of healthy food.   At the end of each recipe, you’ll find the ‘per serving’ information and how many the recipe actually serves which can be very beneficial if you are trying to lose weight.

The recipe titles crack me up.  To give you a few examples:

  • Lord of the Wings
  • Dunk `n` GoNuts!
  • Kentucky Freud Chicken
  • These Beets Were Made for Walkin’
  • Pea Diddy

See what I mean?  They’re hilarious and the little cartoon drawings fit the titles and make it even more fun.  These and the little stories, song remakes, and tips that go with the each recipe make it an absolute hoot!

Don’t get me wrong either, just because the cookbook is fun and entertaining, doesn’t mean the nutritional value & information is not there.  For instance, did you that your fingernails grow faster on the hand you favor and that your nails can tell you if you have a vitamin deficiency??  Or do you know the real lowdown on Sweet-n-low?  I bet you think you do but you don’t!  Just more great reasons to read the book.

This is instantly one of my favorite cookbooks and you can bet that I’ll be creating these healthy dishes in my own kitchen and making sure that mom, who is a cookbook junkie, will be getting a copy of the book too.  After all, she and her man want more healthy meals added to their daily eating rituals!

If you wanna buy this book, they’re having a special 2 for 1!!!! That means TWO COOKBOOKS FOR THE SAME PRICE AS ONE!!! Keep one and give one away.  You know, Christmas is coming up folks!

  1. I try to eat helthy, But with two junk food eaters in the house it is very hard.

  2. I go through spurts where sometimes I’m a total healthnut..and then others when I do drive-thru for dinner. The way I try to stay motivated is by searching for healthy recipes to try.

  3. I feel really fat today, so that’s as good a day as any to stop with the junk food and get healthy eating habits. We’ve been on a long vacation, and ate a LOT. Time to buckle down. I can’t stand the way I feel.

  4. I trying to only indulge when I’m with Rocco, my boyfriend (read: not yours).

Seriously, I’ve been on Weight Watchers since January. I’ve dropped 25 pounds eating less and moving more. I’m always looking for good recipes that I can eat and enjoy without the guilt.

I could be healthier, but at least I’m more aware of what I need to be eating to be my best. Baby steps.

  6. Honestly, I try to eat healthy but I don’t eat consistently (if that makes since) I may eat breakfast, then skip lunch and then be starving before supper. So then I overindulge and then I’m not hungry for supper and then have a bed time snack. It’s crazy. So, what healthy eating I’ve accomplished has been overturned by the extra’s.

Thanks for the chance. This book sounds great.

  7. I was a healthy eater until I became pregnant with my last baby and my craving with her was sweets. And it didn’t end after I had her :-( So I am working my way back to be healthy :-)I yell at myself for going for the chocolate instead of the fruit or veggies. It is a definite work in progress :-)

  10. I do pretty well during the day, its those darn late night snacks that get me into trouble.

  11. I try to eat healthy. But, since I have already raised 6 kids and am now babysitting 5 grandkids-I have to eat on the run or what ever I’m feeding the kids. Mac and cheese is the favorite, so I have tried adding broccoli to it and it worked. One small step for healthy eating.

  12. try to eat healthy but have a husband who thinks a portion is alot bigger- for example cereal is half a bag of cereal for breakfast…I have started serving food on a plate to each person but husband bnever has enough. Also odd hours screw us up and like I said husband is a sabotager of diets and healthy eating

  13. I try to eat healthy with an occasional splurge on the unhealthy side of things!!

  14. We definitely try to eat healthy all the time. I measure and count calories as well. Never thought I would love trying so many new veggies. It has really helped with my weight loss. I still can’t get over how many calories there were in things I used to eat and drink YIKES! I would love to win this book so please count me in.

  17. Could always use some new things to bring to the table. This cookbook sounds just what the chef ordered. That is me!!

  18. We try to eat healthy most of the time. I make almost all of our food from scratch and try to always provide a good-sized salad along with what we eat to add some semblance of balance. I love the Looney Spoons gals. I have their first two cookbooks and enjoy making meals from them, though it has been awhile since I have pulled them off the shelf and dusted them off.

  19. fun, Fun.

I eat very well for breakfast, and then try to eat smaller healthy snacks throughout the day.
I do cheat and eat fast food every now and then and I love making Fried Chicken and homemade mashed potatoes ;-)

  29. Love these books - we have Looney Spoons and Crazy Plates, would love to have the new one to round out the group. Our favorite recipes are usually the baked chicken ones - chicken and rice, BBQ chicken, chicken skewers. I also love all the little side bar conversations that go on throughout the books, great info!

These days, we eat healthy with local and organic foods. Our table has gone from protein being the center of the meal to now being more of a side dish, with grains and veggies taking center stage. So far, so good, although we occasionally go off the deep end with a major pizza fest :-)

  32. My daughter and I are on Weight Watches and we need all the “good” healthy food, plus “good” tasting food that we can get. She is much better on staying on the program than I. I love snacks and we both have to watch our portions.

  33. I “try” to eat healthy, in that I try to eat all 4 food groups and limit sweets. I definitely try to do that with my girls. But if I’m honest, there needs to be some chocolate each day (try to keep it small), and there are the occassional frapps from Starbucks! What can I say! :o)

I have good intentions, I have a really good “healthy” grocery shopping trip… but then I’ll do one of those quickie trips to the store for “one thing”… um yeah. Then I end up getting some junk. But I try, and I at least try to make sure my kiddos are eating healthy, even if I’m not.

  49. I’m a label reader and the first thing I look at is calories as I am always trying to save calories. It doesn’t always work however as I am almost always in need of losing weight. I would love a cookbook with all the nutritional info listed. Thanks for such a great giveaway!

  50. I’m sure everyone’s heard the saying “I’m on a see food diet, I see food, I eat it!
Well I’m here to let everybody know, It’s true, there is such a thing, I’m on it and love it!

  51. Ugh. I swing wildly from one extreme to the other - I go through phases where I am very careful about eating and phases where my urge to bake strikes and I collect new recipes and bake on a daily basis. No, they aren’t “Cooking Light” recipes either, if it’s not full fat I don’t want it! (grin)

The nutritional info in the cookbook sounds interesting.

  52. I eat healthy half the time…the other half I am eating cookies, chips and any other junk food that is in reach!

  53. I try to eat healthy most of the time, but I do have my days or weekends that I eat more junky food than I should. Thanks for the entry.

  56. I try to eat healthy and have healthy snacks in my house but on the other hand I am also big sweets eater.

  57. I try to eat well but there are those temptations like ice cream on a hot day. I think my main problem is that I don’t excercise very much.

  58. i’m on a diet you can’t eat anything good. haven’t had sweets for 5 months

  59. Our eating habits are mainly - if hungry, find something good and eat it. BUT I’ve been trying to change what we eat. I started bringing home fat free cheese (we’re huge cheese fans), Jason complained until I challenged him to eat the fat free cheese and tell me if he could taste the difference. He couldn’t.

I’m also bring a lot more whole grains into the house - it takes a while to get use to them but they’re better for you and they keep you fuller, longer. I like to pick up a lot of fiber rich cereals too - a great snack and good for you.

Also having washed and cut fruits and veggies handy make snacking easier and healthier.

  60. My eating habits can be compared to a roller coaster - sometimes I eat healthy others other times I do not. Sometimes I follow a diet sometimes I do not follow it very well.

  63. Thanks for your generosity and the chance to win a copy of this marvelous book. I am a vegetarian, so most of the time I do eat pretty healthy. 80. I eat healthy most of the time and I’m almost completely vegetarian. Pizza is my weakness so I just choose a lower fat crust variety, go very light on the cheese and just have pineapple or something. It’s still a big treat to me that way. As long as pizza is in my diet once a week or so, I do fine.

  81. I eat healthy most times, but I fall off the wagon often! :( I’m trying to kick the sugar habit. So many things have sugar in them.

  82. Usually, we eat pretty healthy–lots of veggies from the garden or canned fromthe garden; lean meats and fish, plenty of chicken. I try to limit fried foods but DH loves it. We do have occasional pig outs, like potato chips or store bought cookies…..

  89. Lori, this cookbook sounds amazing! Real low fat food recipes, without the ‘cardboard’ tasting stuff? Never knew it was possible! Lately, (a little over a month now) I’ve done my best to get back to the healthy diet that allowed me to lose over 50 lbs two years ago. I’ve gained back a little, but refuse to let my weight get out of control again! So, I eat healthy most of the time, but there are days that I do cheat. :-( I’m sure this cookbook would make staying healthy easier!

  101. My eating habits? They’re terrible. When it comes to meals I eat great. I actually like grilled food better than fried, I like wheat bread, I like water, etc. But I snack. It’s my great downfall. The reason I’m a chubby mommy. Those darn M&Ms, licorice, etc. just call my name saying, “Natalie…eat me, come on, just a little won’t hurt.” I need help, probably therapy. 113. I try to eat healthy most of the time - fresh fruits and vegetables, less meat and junk foods.

  114. I eat and cook very health (vegetarian, whole foods, low-fat) 98% of the time The other 2% is on the unhealthy scale, e.g., when I buy a frozen pizza for a quick meal, when I eat out at a restaurant and nothing healthy sounds good, or when I eat something provided at the office.

  115. very poor eating habits
    THANK YOU GOD BLESS

  116. I am trying to get healthier in my eating habits. I would like to lose about 30 lbs. because I have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high glucose levels. I have cut back on the amount of sugar I eat(and drink!)and I snack less during the evening/nighttime. I am also trying to get more fiber in my diet. So far no real change but I am trying to get motivated to add in some walking or cycling.

  117. I eat what I want and am healthy. The key is to not be a couch potato. My family is from Germany. They eat their fats with no problems, because they are constantly active–mostly walking and bicycling.

  118. I eat pretty healthy. I only have 2 problems. I love Diet Coke (empty calories) and I love sweets. Hope I win!!!!!!!!!!!
