Food Photography Reflections

I thought it would be fun to take a look at my food photos from a year ago and see the differences in then, and now.  Photography has always been a passion of mine but food photography is quite a challenge for me.  I don’t really like to gussy up photos much and I’m not at all about decorating the setting for the dish so I needed a  style of photographing my meals.  I chose the more close up look I guess, trying to focus only on the main food item and not really anything around it, and taking the photo at eye level.

I have to say, I clearly didn’t know anything about my camera or how to take food photos so I owe  Jaden from Steamy Kitchen a big ol’ thank you for her tips in helping me improve my photos.  Thank you so much Jaden!  MWAH!

By the way, her number one tip is LIGHTING!  MUST.HAVE.IT.

I still have soooo much to learn which is why I like reflecting on the past. It makes me realize how far I’ve come and appreciate what I’ve learned so much more.

Clearly these are before pics.  Ummmm, yeah……..do I really need to say anything?

Now let’s see where I am in my food photo taking skills a year later!

  1. Amen sister! Meredith from Merchant Ships sent me a few tips and its made a WORLD of difference! No flash and natural lighting. Angles and using the Macro setting. Amazing, really!

    Photos are looking great girl!!!

  2. Rachel says:

Well done! That is quite the improvement – I really like your newer photos. I’m impressed!

  3. You know I love your photos :) You have improved a lot, I love these newer pictures. I think food photography is one of the most difficult ones. I’ve been wanting to share some of my recipes for a long time in my blog, but most of the time my photos have ended up being so bad about the food, that I haven’t even published the recipes… But thanks to your example I finally published some of my recipes last Christmas.

  5. Rita J says:

You have come a long way, baby! The latest photos are very professional, you could put them in a magazine. Big pat on the back.

  6. A Cowboy's Wife says:

Thanks y’all! I appreciate the nice words:)

And Rita, a magazine eh?? I don’t know about that but I’d sure be happy if I got that pitch in one of my 500 daily emails! hehehee

  7. LOOKIN’ GOOD!!!

  8. ugh, I gave up on my food photos. I could never get them right, and they just looked gross. Oh well. Yours look totally amazing though!

Great Job with the lighting. I’ve seen directions on how to build light boxes online and I’ve thought of making one of them.

    Thw pictures look great!

  13. Lori – I think your photos look great! So great, in fact, that I may even gain a pound by looking at them!

Now, you just need to work on a head shot for me – make me look skinny and edible too :-)

  14. you’re pictures are awesome! Keep up the good work.

  15. Megan says:

It’s amazing how much better we get with these things over time. My first months of pictures are terrible! But I like to think the ones I have now aren’t half bad. I also have a little help because my boyfriend takes a lot of my pictures, and he has a much better eye for lighting, etc.

  16. I’m right there with you! My first umpy-leven photos or so were horrendous! Better lighting and a lot of practice have gotten me about halfway where I want to be, but one day I need to go back and re-shoot my first year or-so worth, just so I’m not embarrassed any more.

    your shots look wonderful!

  17. Monik says:
