Julia Child (Meryl Streep) and Julie Powell (Amy Adams) in Julie & Julia. This movie is based on two true stories, Julie & Julia intertwines the lives of two women who, though separated by time and space, are both at loose ends…until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.
I’m really excited about seeing this, how ’bout you?? It’s also quite interesting to read the real Julie’s blog. I was reading that Julia Child actually did not approve of the “cook one recipe every day” project.
Jones says Child did not approve of Powell’s cook-every-recipe-in-one-year project. The editor and author read Powell’s blog together (Julie and Julia was published a year after Child’s 2004 death). “Julia said, ‘I don’t think she’s a serious cook.’ ” Jones thinks there was a generational difference between Powell and Child. “Flinging around four-letter words when cooking isn’t attractive, to me or Julia. She didn’t want to endorse it. What came through on the blog was somebody who was doing it almost for the sake of a stunt. She would never really describe the end results, how delicious it was, and what she learned. Julia didn’t like what she called ‘the flimsies.’ She didn’t suffer fools, if you know what I mean.”
Wow.

Anyways, I’d love to hear your initial thoughts on the movie, after you’ve seen the movie, and how you think Meryl Streep did in portraying Julia Child, which in my opinion, would be hard shoes to fill but if anyone could do it, it would be her.

I saw the movie last night and couldn’t wait to post my review on my blog this morning! Rather than repeat myself … I’ll just say that despite some flaws, I really loved this movie. It could have been a caricature of Julia Child, but it wasn’t — it was a celebration of love, cooking and overcoming obstacles.
I thought Amy Adams was perfection. I thought the plotline had holes, but not so many that I felt unresolved at the end. I hated the actual ending of the movie, but can deal with it since the 2 hours leading up to it were so magical.
In my opinion in the movie they very VERY loosely based the Amy Adams character on Julie Powell. She is much more likeable portrayed by Amy Adams and I don’t feel that the movie resembled the actual person of Julie Powell. I would watch this one when it comes on TV for the sake of the great Meryl Streep, but I have no love for Julie Powell whatsoever.
I have read and enjoyed both books the movie was based on. I do agree the movie wasn’t perfect. But most books to movies aren’t. I thought Streep did a wonderful job and I thought the Julia portion was more complete than the Julie version. The movie made it seem like cooking through the book was easy and everything went smoothly. It did not show all the angst that Julie went through.
I did love the movie even with it’s faults!
I just saw the movie this afternoon and I was entranced by Meryl Streep’s performance of Julia Child. So many of the head and hand movements were so Julia. Meryl Streep is an excellent actress, of course, and so believable. They sure made her look taller than I think she is! And Amy Adams played such a likeable character as Julie. I haven’t read the blog or the book, but I hated to see the movie end. Now…I want that recipe for Boeuf Bourgignon! I feel driven to try to make it. Silly, huh?
Saw the movie because the trailers look extraordinary with Streep. I am old enough to remember Julia on television and always enjoyed her love for life and her enthusiasm. Those two traits came across so strongly in the movie that it brought me to tears a couple of times. Julie told us on several occasions that she was not the greatest of people in person. Why show that? I loved her deciding to cook to provide a life project that would improve her. It did! the movie is well worth seeing if for no other reason that Stanley Tucci. What a gem he is. I’m 67 years old and cannot wait to buy Julia’s book and learn to be a better cook. What more could Julia have wanted?
I really enjoyed the movie!! I thought Meryl Streep did a fabulous job! And I liked the blogging references. Definitely made me hungry and I do want to try some of those recipes now!
I adored the movie. Amy Adams, Meryl Streep, food and blogging are a delightfully delicious recipe in my opinion!
