I make mine a bit different. I cook the ground meat and seasonings and then put it in the bottom or a 9x13 dish, top it with the mashed potatoes and cheese that way you are eliminating some of the fat from the meat.

I love that dish - so pretty! The food in it sounds pretty good, too. I'm thinking my guys would enjoy it.

I think the finished product looks yummy with the mashed potatoes and melted cheese. My sister in law is from France and made a dish she called hamburger pie. A layer of browned and seasoned ground beef on the bottome. A can of cream style corn over top of the meat. A layer of mashed potatoes on top. Entire dish baked in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes. My kids were crazy about it.

Most casserole dishes aren't overly attractive - but when you get the right mix they can be so yummy and very homey. I make a Shepherd's Pie that my guys love, but I'm not to crazy about. It is the meat and usually veggies (onions, carrots, peas, etc.) in a little bit of a thick gravy and then topped with the potatoes and cheese.
