I’m actually not a big fan of cookbooks so when I got a new one in the mail the other day, I was hesitant that I’d like it, as I am with other cookbooks.  But then,  I opened it up and saw that it was a recipe collection from KitchenAid and was immediately interested.

It’s hard to find a cookbook that is special.  One that has ‘features’ and doesn’t put me to sleep or cost me an arm & a leg to buy the ingredients.  Thank goodness KitchenAid didn’t let me down.  Here’s what I love about the cookbook.

1) It’s a binder cookbook. I LOVE that I can take the pages out of the cookbook vs having to sit the cookbook upright wherever I’m cooking.  This means I can move the recipe around from station to station if I need to. It also means that I can laminate the pages if I wanted too!!!!  It’s a fun tip I learned way back then and it’s awesome.  You don’t have to worry about getting food all over the page and messing it off. You’ll be able to wipe it right off, so I highly recommend you do that.

2) Speaking of lamination, there’s a front plastic page that helps protect the start of the cookbook.  I like the simple things, what can I say.

3) TABS! LOVE LOVE LOVE the tabs. There’s 19 food tab categories which covers everything.  There’s a few additional tabs for the Glossary/Cooking Terms, Index, and ‘My Recipes’. I love the Cooking terms section and at the back you have your measurement conversions.  I just love the tabs because you can find the specific category you’re after super quick.  And to make it even easier, on the back of the tab page, there’s a list of recipes that are in that section, and their page  number.  VERY USER FRIENDLY!

4) Simple but delicious recipes. One of the things I hate about cookbooks is the fact that so many of them call for such special, high end ingredients that I either can’t find or can’t afford.  That is NOT the case with this cookbook.  I browsed the entire recipe collection of over 400 and was extremely pleased with the ingredient list with pretty much all of them.  That, my friends, is a rare thing.   Each recipe has a photo and clear recipe instructions.

As I mentioned earlier, in the very back of the book, you are able to write your own recipes on the pages.  What I’d like to know though, is if additional ‘my recipe’ pages can be bought to add to the collection, since they only give you three.  I think they should!

What recipe do I want to try?  The Rustic Plum Tart.  YUM!!! We love plums but I’ve never made anything with plums.  Totally gonna though when they are back in season.

The KitchenAid Refrigerator is Ah-MAZING!   I have always wanted one with the freezer on bottom and am in awe of how much it holds.  KitchenAid sent me French Door Bottom Mount Interior Dispensing, Architect Series II.   Just the beauty of it breathtaking but the features and knowing it’s a brand I can trust is what really counts in my book.

The first thing we noticed was how tall and wide it was, way different than our previous. It’s also not as a deep as a standard fridge but the width and height makes up for it.  It holds a massive amount of food people. I immediately unpacked it, removing all the wrap and putting the shelves up, which was super easy!  The door shelves are removable and very easy to move up and down.  The front of them are clear so that you can see through and quickly grab the item of choice.  The inside shelves are adjustable as well.  There are three total drawers; two standard drawers for veges and such and one long deli drawer.  LOVE that deli drawer!

You can easily adjust the temp and we especially love the door alarm.  It beeps when the doors are left open too long.  The freezer rocks!  It’s ice making mean machine, with a scoop!  LOTS of storage in the freezer. MUCH more storage than a regular fridge freezer.   I wish I would have just bought one a long time ago.  It really is worth the extra money in my opinion.  The features are great, the storage is big, and the overall design is sleek.

You should know that just because I am taking Wilton Decorating classes, that it doesn’t mean I’m any good at it still.  I’m definitely learning much more but I still have such a long ways to go.  With this Hair Raising Cake, I wanted to do three things; incorporate Halloween of course, try not to completely ruin it, and pay tribute to those fighting breast cancer like my Aunt and Grandmother since October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Now one of my biggest problems is that I do things spur of the moment and when making cakes like this, it’s really important to read all the directions to see what supplies you’ll need and try to estimate how much time you’ll need. I did neither. And it’s obvious.  I guess you should see how the original looks like first before I get to mine.

She’s cute huh?  Mine does NOT look like her, sadly.  I did want to incorporate pink though so I switched up her hair a bit. See below……

GETTING STARTED

I was missing a couple of tips and had no clue how to make certain colors of icing but I just went with the flow. I mean, why get all crazy cause you don’t have the exact things right? While it would be nice, I was simply having fun more than anything.  I started with the Long Loaf Pan that uses 8-9 cups of Duncan Hines cake batter.  To give you an idea, one box of cake mix is about 4-5 cups of batter so I used two boxes but didn’t  use it all. I also made a couple of different batters for something else I was making which is why you see two different color batters below.

I prepared my icing first while cake was baking (which took about 80 minutes at 325′), starting with the green.  Now Wilton tells you to combine Lemon Yellow Icing color and Leaf Green Icing color to get the green but I had neither so I used Buttercup Yellow and Teal.  It’s not near as lime green as shown in the photo but I thought it was a nice compliment to the light pink hair.   I also just added a tiny bit of Christmas Red Icing color to white to get the light pink.  Since I didn’t really want to use black on the cake, I went with a mustard color for the pupils, lashes, mouth, and plug things in the sides of her neck.

The cake cooled for over an hour and I set out to decorate. I was missing an important tip, 4B to be exact so I had to make due with what I had.  I think I used 21 or something….not as easy to use ad 4B I’m sure.  Anyways, I iced about 6 inches of the cake with the green color for Halloween and alternated pink and white for the hair in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I did not take my time..it was getting late and I was tired. I had no idea how long it actually takes from start to finish to do this. I’ll know next time though.   Overall, she’s not just real pretty but I love her.  I made her and feel like she’s a fighter……

So Happy Halloween and don’t forget to get a mammogram and support the women fighting breast cancer like cooking for the cure baby!

P.S. If you don’t have a hobby store that sells Wilton products, you can always order online or check out Walmart’s selection of Wilton goods!  You know what I’d love to see?  Classes taught at our local Walmart!  You know how they have them at Michaels?  Well ours is over an hour away so I’d love if they’d bring the Wilton classes to Walmart!!  *HINT*

KitchenAid French Door Bottom Mount Interior Dispensing Refrigerator-Architect Series II

Just the word Kitchenaid gives me a happy feeling but even more so when I see them doing kind & charitable things for people and partnering with Cook for the Cure.  Since I’ve had two family members both dealing with Breast Cancer, then it’s very important for me to participate and spread the word.

From July 16, 2010 to July 18, 2010, cooks across America will be Cooking for the Cure and you can join in to help the cause!  It’s very simple and goes like this:

• Register to host a Cook for the Cure party, cookout, office party, or community dinner.
• Download the donation forms.
• Instead of asking guests to bring a dish, ask them to bring a donation to help fight Breast Cancer.
• Submit your donations before September 10, 2010 to be eligible for the plate or whenever just to support the cause!

If you raise $50 or more, you will be sent a Pass the Plate serving dish.  Use this serving dish and pass it on. Tell the person you are passing it on to, about the cause and how it works.  Every time the plate is passed and logged at the website, Kitchenaid makes a $5 donation to the cause. Pretty freakin’ awesome! 

And maybe you’re not into hosting parties and such….well consider doing this.  Create a meal for your family, call that your hosted party, and make the donation yourself!  You’re feeding the family of course but still supporting the cause!

What I plan to do is purchase one of Kitchenaid’s Pink kitchen products that supports the Susan G Komen cause and out of all the people who come and donate, I’ll draw a winner at my party to receive the Kitchenaid item!  It’s a win-win situation!  Some of the pink Cook for the Cure Kitchenaid products include:

The Kitchenaid Stand Mixer is my most favorite small appliance in my kitchen.  It’s been with me a long time and just recently got me through 6 batches of fried pie dough…all within minutes!  Anyone who spends a lot of time in the kitchen needs one.
